Technical Designer

The designer will maintain a professional environment in specialized fashion studio areas and offer extra-help sessions and at least 20 SCADextraTech workshops each quarter, including weekends and breaks between quarters. The individual in this position will create a database of supplementary materials (technical handouts and videos) for online student access, foster a professional environment,ensure consistency in fit aesthetic based on the individual fashion student's design intent, andassist in developing, updating, and utilizing the library of blocks, patterns, and muslins.

The technical designer will oversee the development of student garments from start to finish by communicating effectively with students on all intended fit corrections and technical information. This position involves collaborating and establishing professional working relationships while assisting the fashion department in presenting and conducting fits on live models to ensure fitting of garments and to apply possible adjustments. Assisting fashion students in implementing design changes and making contingency plans and conforming to SCAD standards is required, as is instructing students with using various equipment in the fashion studios. The technical designer will work with different softwares and machines as necessary. Working with the awards and recognition office will be required to assist students with fashion competition submissions for successful outcomes on domestic and international platforms.

Daily duties include email correspondence with multiple departments, completing key inventory and maintenance checks to ensure studio resources are accessible and functioning, identifying department supply needs, record keeping, and upholding department specific technical standards.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in fashion design or closely related program and relevant work experience in technical design
  • Excellent understanding of apparel design and development process from inception to pattern layout and production
  • Knowledge of how products are sourced and developed
  • Ability to adjust patterns and analyze garment construction and workmanship
  • Ability to manipulate existing patterns and communicate adjustments to fashion students, professors, and the fashion department to reflect changes
  • Effective organizational skills
  • Knowledge and skill in commercial fit and pattern standards, corrections, grading, construction methods, sewing, and sketching
  • Experience in leading live fittings and evaluating overall fit with the ability to make necessary fit and pattern corrections to achieve the desired fit
  • Ability to identify apparel flaws quickly and effectively and to adjust designs on the spot

  • Knowledge of factory production, tools, and machinery
  • Experience in operating industrial sewing machines, industrial sergers, specialty sewing machines, digital printing equipment, and an industrial fabric cutter
  • Proficiency in PC operation, including Microsoft Office products

Preferred Qualifications:
  • More than five years of industry experience with technical design or closely related programs
  • Knowledge and skills in AvancĂ© Embroidery Machine and Mutoh Fabric Digital Printer
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop software
  • Experience with CLO or other pattern-design software
  • Effective management skills

Travel required: Less than 10%

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
