Position Overview:

Reporting to the Executive Director, Parent Outreach and Development, the Assistant Director is an integral member of the parent team, primarily responsible for several key areas of development activity including leadership annual giving, major gifts, prospect management and stewardship, and special projects as assigned by the executive director. The Assistant Director manages a portfolio of non-alumni parent prospects and donors nationally with emphasis on individuals with the ability to give $10,000+. The Assistant Director works closely with the executive director and peers in the Parent Outreach and Development office to implement priorities and devise fundraising strategies, programs and events. The Assistant Director cultivates donors and volunteers for annual and major gifts, and leadership roles on the Penn Parents Council. The Assistant Director will manage a prospect portfolio of approximately 100 prospects with the ability to give $25k+ to the University, conducting approximately 75 visits annually (6 per month). Focus will also be placed on logistical oversight of the Penn Parents Council, prospect management and solicitation and stewardship of rated parent populations.

Specific Responsibilities:

Fundraising and Prospect Management

The Assistant Director will support the fundraising activities and efforts on behalf of the Office of Parent Outreach and Development by managing a prospect portfolio and contributing to the development of a robust donor pipeline for the program.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of 100 alumni and non-alumni donors and prospects with a focus on those with the capacity of making $25,000+ commitments.
  • Conduct at least 75 individual visits per year, focused on identifying, cultivating and soliciting donors.
  • Meet personalized annual fundraising goal, but also understand responsibilities for overall goals for the Parent Program.
  • Manage the process of identifying, qualifying, cultivating and soliciting individual donors.
  • Design and implement strategic cultivation/stewardship events and other opportunities in support of engaging prospects of high leadership annual giving or major gift capacity.
  • Assist in research and strategic analysis of prospect data to help prioritize individual alumni/donor engagement with Executive Director.
  • Cultivate donors and volunteers for future leadership roles at Penn.
  • Collaborate with fundraising and alumni relations colleagues across Penn to devise donor strategies and strategic partnerships.
  • Familiarize themself with Penn Parent priorities to effectively make the case for support.
  • Support communication efforts, as appropriate, to shape and share the work of the school with donor and parent constituents. Examples may include contributing to the development of proposals, advancement and collateral, The Penn Parents Magazine, and others as needed.


Stewardship and Donor/Alumni Engagement

Driven by scope and strategy, the Assistant Director will support and develop nuanced opportunities, outreach, and stewardship for current and future parent donors.
  • Collaborate on planning of Welcome Receptions, New Parent and Family Orientation, Homecoming, and other events, with an eye towards the needs of rated parents, in particular.
  • Manage and oversee the parent Benjamin Franklin Society, growing membership.
  • Identify and support ways to cultivate key segments of parent, donor populations based on program, format, profession, and/or cohort affinities, as appropriate, to identify and engage potential donors. Examples may include targeted outreach and stewardship, small group or regional events, engaging with other volunteer groups, and/or other to be determined.
  • In collaboration with colleagues in The Penn Fund, International Development, and/or Major Gifts, participate in planning of the annual Benjamin Franklin Event.
  • Foster and expand key partnerships within DAR and Penn with a strategic emphasis on garnering support for development efforts with parents, including but not limited to faculty, select program staff, and others as needed.


Special Projects

The Assistant Director will be assigned special projects as they arise but will also be responsible for several ongoing efforts:
  • Collaborate on and implement stewardship events and activities, as needed with the DAR Communications Team, The Penn Fund, and other DAR offices, throughout the year.
  • Oversee planning of international fundraising travel/relationships for AVP and Executive Director, in coordination with Office of International Development.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and 1-3 years minimum of successful experience in development or equivalent combination of education and experience required, preferably in higher education.
  • Experience with direct solicitation of five and six figure gifts from individuals and/or family foundations.
  • Must have ability to manage multiple projects in a goal- and deadline-oriented environment, and to work independently and as a strong team player.
  • Should be able to analyze and concisely articulate issues and to work with a diverse group of constituents.
  • Strong strategic and conceptual abilities necessary to succeed within complex and goal-oriented environment.
  • Ability to learn the needs and priorities of Penn and translate those into written proposals is required to successfully carry out this job.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Travel, evening/weekend work and valid driver's license required.
