Job Description Summary
Working as a team with the Director of Information Management the Scholarly Communications & Information Coordinator will provide research, communication, design, and other services as needed to researchers at the Population Studies Center & the Population Aging Research Center and will work with the staff and directors of both centers to meet the needs of researchers.

Job Description

The Population Studies Center (PSC) at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) has fostered research and training in population since 1962, with support from the NIH's NICHD P30 program from 1978-2003 and the P2C Population Dynamics Research Infrastructure Program from 2018 to present (formerly the R24 funding mechanism from 2003-2018). The goal of the PSC is to remain a national and world leader in research on the growth and structure of human populations and on the role of socioeconomic stratification and human and social diversity on the health of populations. The PSC is characterized by strong continuity in the production of high-quality research on demography, population-based studies of health and human development, and behavioral and social science approaches to sexually transmitted diseases and reproductive health. The PSC maintains a strong core commitment to demography (the study of the growth and structure of populations) - including the Graduate Group in Demography (GGD), a world-leader in the training of demography PhDs. The Population Aging Research Center (PARC) established in 1994 with a grant from the National Institute on Aging has over 28 years of experience of creating the right setting for interdisciplinary research on the demography and economics of aging, including a focus on diverse and often underrepresented populations domestically and globally. PARC in conjunction with the PSC, sponsors an annual pilot proposal competition, a weekly seminar series, an online working paper series, the Population Center Working Papers (PSC/PARC), and a newsletter.

DUTIES:
  • Maintain Endnote databases (or other in-house databases) at the PSC used for grants reporting. Tasks include data entry, fact checking, CV culling, proofreading, and formatting biosketches.
  • NIH Public Access Policy compliance monitoring. Tasks include communicating with researchers and publishers and interpreting steps needed to reach compliance and checking a variety of sources to verify completion, working with the Director of Information Management to coordinate these tasks.
  • Manage digital collections in ScholarlyCommons@Penn , perform quality control of metadata, make changes as needed to reflect availability of scholarly work, proofread as needed. Coordinate with the Scholarly Commons Associate at Penn Libraries to create new subcollections and communicate with BePress to resolve issues that arise. Upload working papers, research briefs, and dissertations for PSC and PARC Research Associates, Research Affiliates, postdocs, and graduate students.
  • Create new websites and webpages and edit and manage existing Drupal and WordPress websites for PSC, PARC, GGD, and other research project and network websites. Assist Research Associates with designing websites and drafting content to highlight research projects, events, publications, and share research data. Assist with keeping the PSC, PARC, GGD, research project and network websites updated with news, people, events, conferences, announcements, research opportunities, newsletters & bulletins, etc. Train research assistants to edit and manage sites for faculty as needed.
  • Design graphics for programs, flyers, signage, newsletters, websites, social media, and promotional material to highlight library services as well as PSC and PARC activities and research (using Canva and apps in the Adobe Creative Cloud).
  • Assist with sharing news, events, videos, and scholarly research (including working papers) on PSC, PARC, GGD websites, the Mailchimp Penn Population Studies Newsletter/Bulletin, PSC YouTube channel, and social media. Assist in the creation of weekly newsletters, monthly bulletins and email reminders in Mailchimp. Cull news from various email subscriptions & websites at Penn and beyond for reuse for grants, websites, & dissemination products. Keep the PSC, PARC, GGD, and other research project and network websites updated with news, people, events, conferences, announcements, research opportunities, newsletters & bulletins, etc.
  • In coordination with the Director of Information Management, maintain the library's print collection by inventorying, shelf-reading, shifting, and cataloging. Attend EOS training as needed. Review and update written workflows. Assist with transferring collections; train student workers to assist.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned (e.g. Customer Service, Reference and Research Services, Circulation, etc.)


QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: Bachelor's degree and 2-3 years of experience in a related academic research or information services environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Web design and Content Management System (CMS) experience (i.e. WordPress or Drupal). Fluency with Microsoft Office (including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere, Adobe Acrobat Professional), and experience with bibliographic citation management software. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a close-working team at a grant funded research center which has a grant deadline-oriented setting requiring excellent written and oral communications skills, initiative, strong organization, an impeccable attention to detail, adherence to deadlines, analytical skills, flexibility, aptitude to learn new technical skills and implement new technology as needed, and the prioritization of multiple demands. Ability to learn and understand relevant library terminology and functions required. Ability to lift, transport, sort and shelve library materials.

Preferred: Bachelor's or Master's with course work in the social sciences, communications, library or information sciences or related experience. Extensive experience with the Google Suite of Apps (i.e., Calendar, Sheets, Docs, Forms, Chat, Spaces, Analytics, etc.). Experience in content creation including writing, proofreading, editing, graphic design, photography, and video editing. Experience using social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn and with using for scholarly communications or events. Experience with the use of social media publishing tools (Sprout Social) and analytics tools to measure performance and to adjust efforts. Knowledge and understanding of the nature and function of academic research libraries, of library/research services, customer service in libraries and of bibliographic records (MARC), cataloging (Library of Congress Classification System), and library information storage and retrieval systems would be ideal. Additionally, experience working in an academic research setting or proofreading grants, managing funder requirements, knowledge of NIH/NSF funding requirements as they pertain to publications, copyright, and data would be valuable.

Targeted Pay Range : $24.13 to $30.22 per hour or $43,917 - $55,000 annually based on 35 hours per week.
