POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Director of Student Equity & Inclusion Initiatives will report to the Associate Dean for Equity & Justice and collaborate with E&I Team members, Penn Law colleagues, faculty, students, University, and community partners, to cultivate a deep sense of belonging for all students at the Law School. The Director will provide focused support to members of historically marginalized groups to ensure access, equity, and inclusion, particularly for BIPOC and first-generation students. The Director will lead the Law School's support for affinity groups, establishing robust communication and systematizing support for and collaboration among student leaders.

Job Description

Key responsibilities include:
  • Support inclusive community for all students:
    • Plan and execute E&I orientation programs for all students in collaboration with Student Affairs
    • Lead new E&I Fellows Program - training and support for ongoing student training and educational programs
    • Plan and execute cultural competency training for students doing pro bono service in collaboration with TPIC
    • Plan and execute onboarding and inclusion initiatives for LLM Class in collaboration with Graduate Programs
    • Plan and execute onboarding and inclusion initiatives for ML students in collaboration with ML Program
    • Provide guidance and support on culturally competent and accessible event planning for student groups in partnership with Student Affairs and Events Team
    • Lead E&I's partnership with our Student Advisory Board to inform E&I Programs by identifying and generating ideas to address on the ground student needs
    • Lead E&I's collaboration with Law School partners on student equity and inclusion programming and needs


  • Provide focused support for students from historically marginalized groups:
    • Cultivate strong relationships with affinity groups, in partnership and collaboration with Office of Student Affairs:
      • Meet with affinity group leaders regularly
      • Assist with accessibility initiatives
      • Provide targeted support, training, and coordination for affinity group conferences annually
      • Evaluate/administer affinity group funding requests
      • Schedule semesterly Affinity Leader Roundtables
      • Bridge campus cultural centers and local bar associations with affinity groups
      • Support Admissions recruitment efforts
    • Design and administer programs:
      • Plan and execute Pre-Orientation programs for affinity students
      • Plan and execute Affinity Leader Training Program
      • Collaborate to support the Outreach Program for undergraduates from historically underrepresented groups
      • Provide supportive outreach when campus, local, national, and global events impact our students
  • Direct the Dr. Sadie T. M. Alexander Scholarship Program:
    • Ensure robust mentorship and support for Scholars
    • Nurture a vibrant and enriching Scholar Community
    • Plan and execute programs for Scholars, in partnership with faculty, staff, and alumni partners
    • Collaborate with Admissions to effectuate the Scholar selection process
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

JD preferred but not required. BA/BS and 7-10 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. We seek candidates who are deeply student-centered and who also appreciate how to work and collaborate in complex institutions. The best candidates will have lived, educational, and at least four years of professional experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in communities and/or institutions. A substantive understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion broadly is key. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to design, plan, and implement programmatic curricula and to oversee complex processes. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in working with large groups of mission-driven individuals to plan and execute goals. Exceptional discretion and interpersonal skills are essential. Candidates should possess strong personal and professional initiative. The ideal candidate will be a team player who has an established track record of collaboration in the workplace. We emphasize individual responsibility while requiring strong team support. Cover letter and resume are requested with all applications.
