Job Description Summary
The Wharton IDEA Courseware Team seeks a Senior Instructional Design Project Leader to support online, face-to-face, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses in Wharton's degree programs and related initiatives. Reporting to the Director of Instructional Design, the Sr. IDPL will work closely with Wharton faculty, TAs, and staff, facilitating course design and delivery that supports extraordinary teaching. The Sr. IDPL will collaborate with course teams to recommend and implement innovative and effective uses of the learning management system (currently Canvas LMS) and related teaching tools and platforms (such as Panopto, Zoom, Feedback Fruits, Poll Everywhere, and Ed Discussion) to support course and programmatic goals. The Sr. IDPL will work with Wharton faculty and colleagues to explore, pilot, and implement innovative tools and pedagogical opportunities, and to integrate learning activities in the LMS for both online and classroom instruction.

Job Description

In this position you will:
  • Lead or contribute to instructional design and educational technology projects related to improving learning content, faculty development of online courses, project management, student engagement, learning activities, or assessment.
  • Assist Wharton faculty in providing content to students in online, face-to-face, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses by crafting and configuring LMS (learning management system, currently Canvas) sites with interoperable teaching tools, site templates, and related connected platforms. At peak times (Aug.-Sep., Dec.-Jan.), a higher % time is required.
  • Design and lead delivery of training for Wharton faculty, teaching assistants, and staff on effective uses of Penn's LMS (currently Canvas), related teaching platforms, instructional design, online teaching, accessibility, and universal design through consultations, workshops, documentation, and self-service materials. At peak times (Aug.-Sep., Dec.-Jan.), a higher % time is required. Contribute to related University-wide programs.
  • Provide support, advice, internal troubleshooting, and problem resolution for using learning platforms to faculty, teaching assistants, staff, and students; contribute to evening/weekend on-call rotation.
  • Research emerging trends in instructional design, online teaching, and educational technology. Regularly present Wharton success stories in this field at conferences and/or in publications.
  • Serve on school- or university-wide committees advancing the innovative instructional design, online teaching, or education technology efforts.
  • Supervise contract personnel and other support staff involved in courseware delivery and related platforms. Develop training and documentation for contract and support staff.

  • Master's degree and at least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in instructional design or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough understanding of instructional design concepts and principles, college-level pedagogy (including active learning principles, collaborative learning, and case-based learning), accessibility, and methodologies for evaluation and assessment.
  • Thorough understanding of learning management systems (Canvas preferred) and integrated teaching tools (such as video management, video conferencing, peer evaluation, assessment, and discussion).
  • Experience evaluating, recommending, and supporting instructional technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience forming collaborative and constructive relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Experience working with faculty to develop online courses or to adapt face-to-face courses to an online modality.
  • Experience creating accessible content with clear messaging and aesthetic appeal.
  • Track record of successfully leading instructional design or educational technology projects.
  • Demonstrated interest in advancing education, including research and evaluation of new technologies, tools, and teaching trends.
  • Advanced presentation, writing, project management, and customer service skills.
  • Effective communication with technical and non-technical audiences is essential.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is required, as is problem-solving, juggling multiple priorities, and working within set time frames.
  • Ability to participate in the team's on-call evening and weekend support rotation (currently 1 week on call, 3 weeks off).
  • Preferred qualifications: Three or more years of experience working with the Canvas learning management system (LMS). Experience as a higher-education instructor or workshop facilitator. Experience as a Quality Matters Peer Reviewer or similar. Working knowledge of API frameworks (such as REST or GraphQL), related data formats (JSON, YAML), or web application components (e.g. caching, Document Object Model). Working knowledge of learning analytics.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $80,000-90,000, depending on experience.
