The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate Professor position in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area of health policy, health economics, behavioral economics, and/or health outcomes. Applicants must have an M.D. or Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree.

Teaching responsibilities may include medical students, residents, clinical fellows, undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral trainees.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include establishing an innovative and independent research program that will attract and maintain extramural funding from government agencies, private foundations and industry.

The Health Policy Division has a broad array of faculty that research both domestic and global health policy with a wide range of topic areas including health services, economics of aging, anti-poverty policy, HIV policy, food policy, and other areas. Applicants in mid-career are encouraged to apply for this position.

The successful applicant for this position will:
(1) Demonstrate their ability to develop and maintain a high-impact research program including extramurally funded projects;
(2) Increase the Department's instructional and research capacity in their area of focus;
(3) Contribute to the Department's mission through serving on committees and collaborating with other faculty members, staff, students, partners, and community stakeholders.

This position is being funded by the Health Care Transformation Institute, co-led by Drs. Ezekiel Emanuel and Amol Navathe. The Institute has a focus on designing and evaluating interventions to improve quality and/or lower costs of care. In particular, the Institute has focused research projects on bundled payments, primary care capitation, physician feedback reporting, and end of life care interventions. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate on and be the principal investigator on intervention studies as well as have their own research agenda. Experience with observational studies using statistical and/or econometric methods is necessary; additional experience with prospective studies in experimental economics or clinical trials is preferred. The successful candidate's research interests will focus on health policy, health economics, behavioral economics, and/or health outcomes.
