Post-Doctoral Fellow Position in the Learning Sciences and Science Education at the Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: May 18, 2022
Deadline:

The University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education (PennGSE), invites applications for a post-doctoral fellow position in the learning sciences and science education. The position entails work on two NSF projects that focus on delivering high quality professional development (PD) to high school science teachers.

The first project investigates the impact of a high school curricular unit on student learning and participation outcomes that builds bioinformatics and data literacy acquired through the collection and analysis of urban environmental air-quality measures. Teachers learn essential pedagogical strategies centered on place-based and culturally relevant learning theories. Students use mobile apps to collect data and then learn how to interpret the data in order to make evidence-based decisions on actions they can take in their communities.

The second project examines scientific epistemic practices of data investigations using computational complex systems models with a focus on transfer of those practices to evaluate controversial socioscientific issues. The central goal is to understand how teachers and students teach with and demonstrate adaptive epistemic practices that include the ability to determine the veracity of knowledge claims based on fit with evidence and deciding which kinds of data are needed to construct accurate decisions in situated contexts.

The post-doctoral fellow will support the coordination of research activities with a major focus on data analysis, writing, and publication. They will work on constructing and revising PD activities such as teacher and student facing curricular materials and the PD delivery platform. They will also contribute to data collection, archiving, and organization of data. We are interested in candidates who have expertise in learning theories, advanced educational technologies, disciplinary knowledge of Biology, teaching at the high school level in urban public schools, and teacher professional development.

The position also entails work with the Principal Investigator and leadership team to develop a rigorous and cutting-edge research agenda that prepares the post-doctoral fellow for their next career steps.

This is a one-year position renewable up to 3 years.
