About the Position

The Area Directors at Lewis & Clark College lead and facilitate the staff, program development, and facility management of a College residential area. Area Directors are responsible to provide a safe living environment and maximize the living/learning experience for residential students, and will actively collaborate with and support Student Life departments. 1-2 openings to fill.

What You'll Do

Residential Student Outreach (25%)
  • Cultivate positive relationships with residential students.
  • Develop a strong knowledge base of the community and its needs.
  • Provide support to struggling students including interpersonal conflict mediation and informal counseling.
  • Communicate with appropriate parties to coordinate student support efforts.

Staff Supervision & Training (25%)
  • Supervise daily activities and evaluate the performance of student paraprofessional staff.
  • Mentor and develop student staff members with an emphasis on leadership growth.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a comprehensive training program for all student staff including August training, regular in-service, January training, and spring orientation/training.

Administration of Processes (20%)
  • Administer housing process for assigned residential area.
  • Assume responsibility for roommate placement, in-hall room changes, room reassignments, opening and closing procedures and occupancy reports for assigned residential area.
  • Adjudicate student conduct cases and generate educational sanctions.
  • Maintain prompt communication and accurate record keeping throughout the conduct process, primarily through the use of the Maxient database.
  • Facilitate the administration of protocols and processes to address the needs of students of concern and to connect them with appropriate resources and support systems.
  • Other duties as assigned by Director of Campus Living

LLC Outcome Assessment (15%)
  • Develop learning outcomes and employ pedagogical strategies reflective of a residential learning community.
  • Monitor program delivery that supports departmental objectives.
  • Develop and assess learning outcomes for applicable living-learning communities, working closely with appropriate faculty, staff, and students to ensure its success.

Emergency Response (15%)
  • Participate in weekly on-call rotation for campus emergencies.
  • Respond to emergency situations including after hours facilities issues, student medical/psychological emergencies, campus-wide issues such as fire and power, policy violations, and situations which require police presence.
  • Manage crisis situations in accordance with Lewis & Clark policy.


Qualifications/Experiences
  • Master's degree in Student Personnel/Affairs, Higher Education Administration or related field
  • Basic computer skills (Email, Word Processing, FileMaker Pro, etc.).
  • 1 year of professional experience that demonstrates a commitment to student and community development. (2 years graduate experience)
  • 1 year of professional experiences that demonstrate an ability to develop and maintain professional and collaborative relationships with other staff and faculty. (2 years graduate experience)
  • 1 year of professional experiences that express and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. (2 years graduate experience)
  • 1 year of professional experiences that demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication, leadership, organization, and administrative skills. (2 years graduate experience)
  • 1 year of professional experience in some combination of the following: educational programs, residential leadership, supervision, mediation, advising, or judicial affairs. (2 years graduate experience)
  • 2 years of experiences that demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication, leadership, organization and administrative skills.
  • Experience with a residential living community (preferably Student Life/Residence Life Experience i.e., Resident Assistant or Resident Director).
  • Experience in crisis situations and crisis management.
  • Ability to remain calm and collected under pressure.
  • Diplomacy, counseling, mediation, and/or conflict resolution skills.
  • Administrative skills sufficient to prepare weekly agendas, to-do lists, coordinate activities, and to perform program planning and schedule duty.

Related Experiences
  • 1 year of experience with and a working knowledge of budgeting and budget procedures, counseling and mediation and human development.
  • Supervision experience.
  • Understanding or experience in an academic liberal arts community.
  • Experience with student activities and event planning
  • Experience working with faculty within the context of a learning community or similar program

Physical Requirements
  • The job works primarily at a desk or is otherwise involved in activities requiring little lifting, climbing or working in tiring positions.
