Job Description Summary
The Clinical Research Nurse C in Infectious Diseases is responsible for implementation of research protocols in HIV, COVID 19 and other Infectious Diseases. The nurse is responsible for management of patient care, collection of medical and medication history, physical assessments, completion of patient visits according to protocol specifications, administration of investigational products by various routes including injections and IVinfusions, procurement of specific laboratory specimens, conducting complex evaluations, and completion of source documentation and clinical research forms. The research nurse also takes an active role in participant adherence to treatment and study visits. Additionally, s/he is required to review all clinical and laboratory data, make assessments on severity of symptoms and diagnoses, and communicate with medical staff regarding protocol specific management of toxicities and adverse events. This position will require the research nurse to have a flexible schedule. Research participants are seen in the clinical and home setting during early morning and early evening hours, some weekend days, as well as daytime visits, and reactogenicity evaluations are done via phone call on all days of the week and year. The research nurse is also responsible for supervision of research support staff. Research assistants are non-licensed personnel assigned to work with the nurse to perform specific tasks that do not require licensure. The research nurse also acts as a mentor to nurses who have joined the unit with less research experience. Research Nurses are responsible for management of very complex evaluations. The nurse will be expected to conduct studies involving a wide variety of investigational products and various sponsors. This area of research requires dedicated attention and care to ensure patient safety and well being. The nurse is responsible for arranging and setting up appointments for procedures in other departments when necessary. The nurse is also responsible for the collection of a variety of specimens.

Job Description

Independently coordinate, with the support of the study team, state of the art clinical trials, including consenting, screening and enrolling eligible subjects, managing the treatment of patients throughout their participation in the study including education about any adverse effects they might experience, provide oversight and coordination of research testing and follow-up, as well as, in some case, directly administer novel research medications. Monitor the care and progress of patients, the treatment of any side effects and status of patients throughout their participation in the study, in addition to providing patient/family education and support. May assist in the writing and development of investigator-initiated protocols, participate in and possibly lead working groups within the CRU that will maximize the efficiency and quality of research performed within the program, including developing SOPs, educate and train clinical and research staff, serve as a resource for the development of study orders and a resource for junior staff. Provide input into the development of efficient work flows and attend any meetings related to the studies. Develop and institute internal strategies for meeting and exceeding trial enrollment, and assuring compliance with all relevant regulatory standards. Help develop internal budgets for sponsored trials, assisting in the development of investigator-initiated trails.

Qualifications

The research nurse position requires an RN license without restriction or limitation and at least 2 to 3 years experience in a clinical setting or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least two years of this experience in research is preferred. Recent experience with venipuncture for phlebotomy and IV infusions preferred. A BSN or MSN preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Strong attention to detail required.
