Job Description

At the Penn Museum, we are passionate about transforming understanding of the human experience. Home to over a million extraordinary artifacts and archaeological finds from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and the Mediterranean, the Penn Museum has been uncovering our shared humanity across continents and millennia since 1887. In bridging archaeology, the study of objects made by humans, with anthropology, the science of humanity, we chart a course for finding one's own place in the arc of human history.

The Magazine and Digital Content Editor (Editor) is a joint report to the Museum's Executive Director of Advancement (EDA) and the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO), coordinating closely with the Publications Department and the Digital Media Center.

Serving as editor of the Penn Museum's members' magazine Expedition, the editor will report to the EDA (who also serves as Publisher of the magazine) and be responsible for working with an editorial advisory board to plan feature article content three to five years out, including themed special issues on resonant current issues and/or major Museum research foci as well as upcoming gallery or exhibition openings. The Editor will also work with colleagues across Museum departments to solicit text and images, edit, and coordinate proofing for short articles on current Museum topics and regular Museum Departments. In creating or soliciting magazine content, the Editor will collaborate with Museum colleagues to plan for broader usage, such as blog and social media posts, links to current exhibitions or galleries, and related public and member programs.

Published three times each year, Expedition offers peer-reviewed feature articles on the latest findings of archaeologists and anthropologists in the field and in the labs-many of them the Penn Museum's own scholars-and on upcoming Penn Museum exhibitions and new galleries. In its regular departments, the magazine also provides a window into the labs, classrooms, archives, and-most of all-the people of the Penn Museum. Our work to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive Penn Museum culture for all stakeholders includes inviting diversity of voices into the magazine; the editor will lead and expand on this work with magazine stakeholders going forward.

Serving also as Digital Content Editor, the Editor will report to the CMCO and serve as an important liaison between departments in the Penn Museum and the Digital Media Center to edit content and update images primarily for the website and other digital communication needs such as email.

The Editor will be responsible for copyediting and proofreading texts to ensure accuracy and tone; ensuring images are the correct size and quality; and upholding communications and web standards. Serving as an expert on the Museum's established Style and Voice guidelines, the Editor will manage content that amplify the brand and accessibility aspects outlined.

The Digital Content Editor receives content from various departments across the Museum: Learning and Public Engagement, Academic Engagement, Membership, Group Sales, Exhibits, Marketing and Communications, and other areas that regularly update web content. After copy-editing and implementing quality checks for images, the Editor collaborates with the Digital Media Center to publish content on the website. The Editor maintains communications flow with content providers, ensuring projects and time-sensitive needs are promptly completed.
