Job Description Summary
This nurse will assist in the coordination of the surgery service by working in clinics, scheduling, facilitating surgery schedules and prep work.

Job Description

Nursing Responsibilities
  • Client education, client consultation, referring veterinarian consultation, prescription refills;
  • Assist in the coordination of the ST clinics, including Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) if needed.
  • Assist in obtaining diagnostic imaging studies, including sedating animals when necessary;
  • Assist in co-ordination of cases with Anesthesia and other services (Radiology, Medicine, ICU, Emergency Service) during the surgery day;
  • Ensure all preoperative blood work and request forms (including anesthesia and radiology) are submitted;
  • Learn all aspects of soft tissue surgery, including routine procedures and instrumentation;
  • Learn instrumentation for MIS as time allows
  • Facilitate communication with owners;
  • Facilitate communication with referring veterinarians;
  • Be available to discharge patient and explain discharge instructions to clients.
  • Work in other nursing areas to provide additional coverage as needed when your service is slow. This will be under the direction of the Director of Nursing after consultation with the ST Service.
  • Contribute to the Ryan Hospital Nursing Holiday Schedule as assigned by the Director of Nursing
  • Obtain and collate all referral paperwork for appointment s
  • Check client list and notify clinician whenever client has arrived
  • At clinicians' discretion, be available to help handling animals, sedations, blood collection, imaging studies, type HIS discharges, obtain prescriptions from pharmacy, transfer case to other service for a consultation
  • Make sure anesthesia, radiology, and endoscopy requests are submitted for the next day's procedures
  • Discuss cases and case order with the faculty and technician AO for the next day
  • Verify with OR techs that all necessary equipment and supplies are available for the following day's procedures
  • Take calls for referring veterinarians and facilitate consultations with clinicians and appointments or admission for referred cases

  • Act as a liaison between sections
  • Inform clinician on duty whenever a consultation is requested and be available to help with the case
  • Keep track of consultations done by each clinician and fees that have been charged.

  • Ensure that the students have all 9 am cases in the Prep. Area with their records and blood work when you arrive 8am.
  • Assist with anesthetic inductions
  • Clip patients
  • Set up operating room if necessary
  • Learn common soft tissue surgery procedures
  • Learn common Minimally Invasive Surgery procedures, necessary instrumentation, instrument setup, and instrument maintenance
  • Learn common Interventional Radiology procedures and necessary instrumentation and inventory.
  • Be prepared to scrub in and run instrument table
  • Ensure appropriate postoperative orders are written in record and signed by clinician
  • Ensure postoperative medication is signed out from Pharmacy
  • Ensure owners and referring veterinarians are contacted after surgery

- Must be a Certified Veterinary Technician.

-Minimum 3 years of experience in Veterinary Medicine.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

-Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment, while demonstrating a high level of initiative and motivation

- Excellent organizational skills essential

Veterinary Technician B 2+ years experience and is CVT

Veterinary Technician C 3+ years experience and is CVT

Veterinary Technician D 5+ years experience and is CVT


T-F 7:30am-5:30pm.

Working conditions can be noisy

Physical requirement: Must be able to lift 20 pounds without assistance, stand for prolonged periods of time, kneel and bend
