POSITION SUMMARY
The College of the Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Arlington invites applications and nominations for the Chair position within the Department of Art + Art History. Reporting to the Dean for the College of Liberal Arts, the Department Chair provides the overall leadership, management, and administration of the department. A major component is overseeing the strategic direction, and vision for enhancing the image and viability of a growing art department. The individual selected will guide the nationally accredited program to the next level of stature and excellence.

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should have a Ph.D. or M.F.A. or the equivalent terminal degree; teaching and scholarship to warrant eligibility for a tenured appointment as associate or full professor; administrative experience in a discipline related to art, design or art history; excellent communication skills; and a track record of advanced leadership accomplishments including a demonstrated ability to lead a diverse and highly collaborative department.

SIGNIFICANT DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Be an advocate for and able to navigate diverse disciplines such as film, animation, packaging design, visual communication design, art history, art education, emerging technology, and studio arts. Our program includes students and faculty at the BA, BFA, and MFA levels.
  • Be a leader who understands the role of and possibilities of a 21st-century comprehensive creative arts program.
  • Serve as an advocate for departmental programs that collaborate with corporations, related industry, and major art institutions in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, the region, nationally, and internationally.
  • Demonstrate success in outreach and engagement with local and regional educational, civic arts, and community organizations.
  • Engage in fundraising collaboration with the Dean and University Development, and to provide leadership in the development of a Friends of Art, Film, and Design and other support organizations.
  • Provide financial oversight of the Department of Art + Art History, including a comprehensive understanding of grant opportunities, external funding sources, the departmental budget and other resource allocations in support of the Department's mission, vision, and strategic planning.
  • Communicate with and mentor faculty, students, and staff to establish and maintain a long-term vision for the department that is consistent with the departmental, college, and university missions.
  • Encourage shared governance, collegiality, and a willingness to engage faculty in strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Enhance the current dynamic teaching environment and the continuing development of the curriculum.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in the teaching, study, and practice of art, design, film and art history.
  • Enforce applicable regulatory policies.
  • Address questions, complaints, grievances, and suggestions from faculty, staff, and students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the dean, provost, and president.

The Department and University:

The Art and Art History department has approximately 800 undergraduate majors and MFA students who earn degrees in twelve studio disciplines and art history ( www.uta.edu/art) . The department is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
