Job Description Summary
The Assistant Director of Outreach Education will report directly to the Director of Shelter Medicine and Community Engagement, Dr. Brittany Watson. The individual will also work closely with the Associate Dean for One Health, Dr. Jennifer Punt, and the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Officer, Dr. Rod Gilbert. Collaboration with other schools, faculty, and programs will be essential for program success. This position will develop and provide educational programming at Penn Vet that will focus on humane education, STEAM focused-outreach, and pipeline-type programming. The Assistant Director will be expected to engage at multiple levels including elementary, middle, high school, undergraduate, graduate, and adults in the community. They will not only conduct educational programming themselves, but also teach others about educational outreach including connecting faculty and veterinary students and undergraduates to the community through sustainable educational efforts. Penn Vet has strong university partners, such as the Netter Center, that will also be able to assist in developing strong community relationships. This individual will be a vital member of the Shelter Medicine and One-Health team.

Job Description

The Assistant Director of Outreach Education will help facilitate interdisciplinary approaches to problems through the authentic learning approach spearheaded by the Penn Vet Shelter Medicine group. They also help provide accessibility and access to the resources at Penn Vet through programming that can safely and effectively engage the community to help increase diversity in the field. By emphasizing real-world problem solving and approaching teaching and veterinary medicine through an evidence-based lens programming can help animals, humans, and help train students both in veterinary medicine, but also translatable skills critical to other fields. Animals can help encourage interest in topics through educational interventions and are natural bridges to relationships in the community. This includes a strong opportunity for STEAM based emphasis and programming in an authentic context that is engaging due to the nature of the human-animal interactions. This also helps maximize the opportunities available in the urban environment and emphasizes the importance of community engagement at all levels for the veterinary school.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Develop and provide educational programming at Penn Vet that will focus on humane education, STEAM focused-outreach, and pipeline-type programming
  • Engage at multiple levels including elementary, middle, high school, undergraduate, graduate, and adults in the community
  • Conduct educational programming as well as teach others about educational outreach including connecting faculty and veterinary students and undergraduates to the community through sustainable educational efforts
  • Work closely with the Associate Dean for One Health and Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Officer, and collaborate with other schools, faculty, and programs. Research evaluation of impact in programming will be required through collaboration
  • Help facilitate interdisciplinary approaches to problems through the authentic learning approach spearheaded by the Penn Vet Shelter Medicine group
  • Online teaching and participation in certificate program development
  • Help provide accessibility and access to the resources at Penn Vet through programming that can safely and effectively engage the community to help increase diversity in the field
  • Interact with pre-veterinary students, and facilitate connecting interested students with the Office for Students (OFS) at Penn Vet. Collaborate with OFS to create forums for recruitment and information sharing from OFS staff using the community programming and connections established and organized by the Outreach Educator


Qualifications
  • A Master's degree and 5 to 7 years of experience (or a Bachelor's degree and 7 to 10 years of experience), or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
  • Background in college-level science courses and the scientific method
  • Experience running a humane education or science outreach program
  • Ability to operate on a sustainable budget
  • Ability to interact at multiple levels of education and to develop effective programs with many objectives (outreach, diversity, education, fundraising, etc.)
  • Teaching experience with adult and secondary school learners
  • A clear commitment to advancing diversity, inclusion and equity
  • A substantial understanding of the ethics of community engagement, DEI, humane education, evaluation of scientific evidence, particularly around animal welfare, and a passion for curriculum development is encouraged
  • Online teaching and participation in certificate program development is also expected
  • Willingness and ability to take initiative, to be adaptable to changing contexts and situations, to learn new skills quickly, and to remain calm in stressful situations


Weekly schedules can vary based on program schedule and task priorities, but will likely include on-site and off-site work requirements during the week and some weekend events. ​
