Job Description Summary
The Director of Marketing and Digital Studios has primary responsibility for driving marketing and communications for the new Venture Lab organization (e.g., former Penn Wharton Entrepreneurship, the Sol. C. Snider Center, and the Weiss Tech Hub) and Tangen Hall, the new student entrepreneurship building with its 68,000 sq ft of innovation spaces. The Director further has primary responsibility for building and running two new Penn-wide student labs - the Digital Design Studio and the Digital Media Lab - within Tangen Hall. This position plays a critical role in Venture Lab's mission attainment by introducing Venture Lab's new brand identity and new programs and by expanding the existing marketing from Wharton-specific students and alumni to the broader Penn community across Philadelphia, San Francisco, Beijing (China), and Bangalore (India).

Job Description

For Venture Lab marketing and communications, the Director creates and manages the communication team's execution of Venture Lab's strategic communications plan and editorial calendar in accordance with key organizational priorities. This role requires the ability to develop/evaluate effective marketing strategies and to build out/execute both new digital assets (e.g., new brand materials, website, career questionnaire, startup portfolio, etc) and the associated workflows for publish multi-platform content like news articles, newsletters, social media messages, podcasts, leadership presentations, and press releases. As the senior leader for all Venture Lab communications, the Director is expected to represent the organization and to interact regularly with senior key alumni and major donors, national media outlets, local ecosystem partners, student affinity groups, and Penn/Wharton alumni associations in elevating Venture Lab's profile and building Venture's Lab reputation for entrepreneurship and innovation.

For the Digital Design Studio and Digital Media Lab, the Director leads the build out of these physical spaces in partnership with Venture Lab's vendors and Wharton Production. The Director will further manage the design and production team's program delivery to all Penn students seeking to create brand logos, websites, video and voice recordings, and livestreams for their startups.

As part of this role, the Director manages Venture Lab's budget for marketing and lab operations, and supervises the work of two full-time staff members, four student workers, a temporary employee, and Venture Lab's branding and website vendors. The Director will work with the Executive Director and the Vice Dean to ensure that goals and milestones are established and met. The Director will exist in a cross-functional role, collaborating with other colleagues across the university, maintaining close working relationships with Engineering Communications, Wharton's Marketing & Communications group, and Penn Central Communications, in order to leverage school resources to accomplish objectives.

Given the rapid growth of the center, this position requires analytical,-thinking, creativity, research skills, ability to innovate, and mastery of technical skills required for brand awareness, brand positioning, budgeting, content marketing, content strategy, and design.

The Director must hold a Master's Degree and 5 - 7 years of related experience, preferably in marketing and communications for a top-tier national university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The Director must have demonstrated excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication and organizational skills. Technically, the Director should have dexterity with the following:

  • Social media (Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.), creation and management of digital assets, WordPress & WordPress plugins, branding, web design, podcast production
  • Audio editing (GarageBand or equivalent), videography, video editing (Adobe Premiere or equivalent), design/photo
    editing (Canva required, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator preferred)
  • Project management skills, ability to prioritize and complete a wide range of projects to specified deadlines with minimal supervision
