Job Description Summary
The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with great potential to reshape the face of medicine as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.

The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the "go-to" organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.

Continuation of all GTP positions is contingent upon grant funding.

Job Description

We are currently looking for a Senior Bioinformatician to manage requests for analyzing Next Generation Sequencing data and contribute to our analysis pipelines as we expand our sequencing capacity. The Nucleic Acid Technologies Core is a service group that specializes in providing sequencing services, data management and analysis support to GTP scientists. This role will lead the data science/analysis functions of the next generation sequencing data generated by the NAT-Core. As a Senior Bioinformatician, you will collaborate and consult with internal scientists on the analyses of Next Generation Sequencing data, both long and short read. Three areas for innovation in this role are developing new computational pipelines to detect genome-wide on- and off-target consequences of genome editing systems in multiple mammalian models (viral integration), gene pathways analysis (gene ontology) for RNAseq, and measuring peptide evolution in the design of novel rAAV capsid variants.

You will provide bioinformatics support including design and data analysis for projects to support and contribute to scientific peer-reviewed publications. A key aspect of this role will be not only analysis and tool building, but training of the broader technical team to implement analysis tools. Also, you will keep up-to-date with relevant algorithm and software developments in the field, implement best practices and help to manage the pipeline development process. Additional responsibilities include helping to grow GTP's computational infrastructure as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or equivalent and 5 years of relevant experience working on bioinformatics projects in genomics, specifically next generation sequencing analysis. Ph. D. strongly preferred.
  • A comprehensive understanding of biology and the application of bioinformatics methods in experimental design, assay qualification, and quality control is a must!
  • Demonstrated success working in a collaborative, matrixed environment.
  • Proficiency required in Python/Perl and R. Proficiency in C# or Java is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing methods for analysis of experimental data in genomics and Next Generation Sequencing, with broad knowledge of bioinformatics algorithms, tools, and statistical methods.
  • Strong UNIX/LINUX/HPC skills are required
