Job Description Summary
The Associate Strength & Conditioning Coach, Head of Basketball Performance is responsible for leading sports performance for men's and women's basketball teams, which including travel and extended hours with those teams. In addition, the position will assist Strength & Conditioning leadership in staff development, as well as supporting the successful design and implementation of Applied Sports Science with respective campus partners such as Penn Injury Science Center, Wharton Sports Analytics & Business Initiative, CHOP and Penn Medicine. Responsibilities also include creating and delivering all aspects of strength and conditioning programming for assigned sports teams and being a contributing team member of the Sports Performance Department. Our goal is to positively impact Penn student-athletes and help them reach their highest potential mentally and physically, reduce risk of injury, and create an unrivaled experience. All staff members will contribute to this goal by educating, inspiring, empowering, and growing their respective teams and student-athletes.

The position requires both an advanced degree of related knowledge and experience, plus the range to think creativity and act collaboratively. A PhD or equivalent is preferred. A successful individual will have strong interpersonal skills, be highly organized, and operate as a great teammate. Integral personal traits are humility, awareness, positivity, and a growth mindset.

Job Description

The primary duties are to: Instruct the team, group, or individual student-athletes in the optimal execution of exercises aiming to obtain the desired results, as well as ensure the health and safety of every student-athlete; create and maintain a positive environment; implement and enforce policies and procedures governing the use of the weight room by all users. Share in the responsibilities of coverage and care of weight room facilities. Help with additional team coverage when needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement holistic training program that meets the needs of the coach, team, and individual. Instruct the team, group, or individual student-athletes in the optimal execution of exercises aiming to obtain the desired results, as well as ensure the health and safety of every student-athlete.
  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with sport coaches, student-athletes, sports medicine, nutritionists, mental health and performance staff, applied sports science partners, and the Director of Strength & Conditioning, and Director of Sports Performance
  • Strength and Conditioning and Director of Sports Performance to assure that the most beneficial results of the strength and conditioning program are being realized.
  • Create and maintain a positive environment. Implement and enforce policies and procedures governing the use of the weight room by all users. Share in the responsibilities of coverage and care of weight room facilities. Help with additional team coverage when needed.
  • Oversee the applied sports science data collection and velocity based training with PUSH with respective teams.
  • Work with other Sports Performance professionals to educate student-athletes and coaches on best practices for healthy and sustainable performance enhancement, including influential lifestyle habits.
  • Select Key Performance Indicators that help assess, monitor, guide, and motivate training. Organize and administer assessment procedures and protocols in an effort to collect valid and reliable data that drive better conversations with the student-athletes and staff.
  • Serve as an ambassador of the Sports Performance program to all potential student-athletes, the campus community, alumni, friends, and family.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning and Director of Strength and Conditioning, and Director of Sports Performance.


Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree is required, Master's Degree or PhD in a related field preferred, and two or more years of experience in a collegiate setting is preferred. Required certification: Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA) and/or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (CSCCa). Experience in data collection, analysis, and data supported decision making is preferred.
