Romance Languages Assistant Professor in Global Francophone Studies

Romance Languages Assistant Professor in Global Francophone Studies
School of Arts and Sciences - Romance Languages

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Aug 30, 2021
Deadline:

The Department of Romance Languages seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with expertise in any area of global Francophone literature and culture with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, or the Maghreb. Preference will be given to candidates specializing in the modern and contemporary periods, although expertise in earlier eras is also welcome. We are especially interested in candidates whose research is interdisciplinary in nature and who could collaborate fruitfully with colleagues in other departments and programs at Penn, including Africana Studies, English, Germanic Languages and Literatures, and Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies.

The teaching distribution for this position is two courses per semester. Candidates will be expected to teach courses from intermediate-level surveys covering a broad chronological and geographic range to upper-level undergraduate courses and graduate seminars in Francophone literature and culture. Native or near-native fluency in French is required. The ability to develop and teach courses that would expand our current offerings and be of interest to the broader Penn community, such as French for the medical professions, would be a plus.

The appointment will begin on July 1, 2022, and candidates are expected to have the Ph.D. in hand by that date. Applications must be submitted online via Penn's Interfolio system, and should include a cover letter, a CV, a writing sample in French or English (20-25 pages), research and teaching statements, and three confidential letters of recommendation. Review of applications begins October 29, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled.
