Senior Research Investigator (Neurosurgery)

Job Profile Title
Research Investigator, Senior

Job Description Summary
We are looking for a Senior Research Investigator (SRI) under the direction of Dr. D. Kacy Cullen, to assume the responsibility of pathological examination of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a neurotrauma and tissue engineering laboratory. The Research Investigator Sr (SRI) will act in a leadership role, overseeing and designing advanced experiments.

TBI often results in prolonged or permanent brain dysfunction with over 2.8 million affected annually in the U.S., with over 5 million total survivors exhibiting chronic deficits. The initial physical event is compounded by secondary consequences such as neurodegeneration, inflammation, edema, and hypoxia. Replicating the injury biomechanics of human mild TBI in animal models presents a substantial challenge. To address this, the Cullen lab uses a swine model of diffuse closed-head TBI that accurately replicates human TBI mechanisms and manifestations due to the neuroanatomical similarities between humans and pigs that are not present in small animals.

The SRI will be expected to lead large-animal studies, using this translational TBI model to characterize acute and chronic neuropathological responses to injury, as well as the underlying molecular and functional alterations.

The SRI will work closely with other members of the lab as well as outside collaborators. She/he is furthermore part of a multidisciplinary team of biomedical scientists and clinicians, striving to advance the treatment and prevention of long-term consequences of TBI in people. She/he is expected to perform large animal handling, behavioral testing, stereotaxic surgery, post-mortem histological analysis, molecular assays, cell culture on neuronal isolations, in vitro cellular assays, and statistical analysis. The scientist is furthermore expected to write summary reports and papers. Additionally, she/he will assist in the preparation of grants, presentations, and administrative reports.

Job Description

The Research Investigator Sr (SRI) will act in a leadership role, overseeing and designing advanced experiments. He/She will assist the Principal Investigator and play a leading role in developing a research program in the advancement of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) research and will play a crucial role both in all aspects of research products including development, implementation, and data analysis. In the development stage, the SRI will assess proposed projects by conducting feasibility studies to provide valuable input regarding viability, efficiency, timeline, and study design. In the implementation stage, he/she will supervise and perform the project. This includes overseeing workflow and productivity of lab personnel and providing training to them on specific techniques as necessary. Finally, the SRI will be responsible for data analysis, preparation of manuscripts, and presenting research findings through various forums. Senior Research Investigator must demonstrate the ability to analyze and present data in professional "publication ready" format and to be able to independently prepare manuscripts and grant writings for submission.
