Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Project Manager, Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) and Fire Camera Monitoring in the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. The position manages/oversees NSL large programs in earthquake monitoring, seismic experiments, and the ALERTWildfire camera network. NSL operates a specialized monitoring network on the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) in southern Nevada for controlled source experiments and earthquake events. In addition, NSL operates a component of the USGS Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) program, in eastern California, with the expectation of future Nevada efforts. Lastly, NSL runs a rapidly growing network of nearly 200 early detection, fire cameras as part of the larger ALERTWildfire program. NSL's EEW is a major USGS initiative for west coast states. The responsibilities include coordinating field activities for EEW specific sites (i.e., station installations/upgrades, telemetry implementation, interaction with agencies/land-owners to secure land-use) and regular direct coordination with USGS 'ShakeAlert' Program Managers in California in order to maintain EEW performance standards. Manage and operate software monitoring tools for EEW stations; real-time performance standards of EEW systems are maintained 24/7 and the position may require developing additional software tools, as necessary, to meet performance goals. The position will require participation in one or more EEW committees. EEW activities require a dedicated manager/coordinator to meet stringent EEW requirements. NNSS area responsibilities include interaction with sponsor for contract management, program goals and reporting/budgeting. ALERTWildfire program responsibilities include close coordination with university partners at UC San Diego and Oregon, along with utilities, counties, BLM, US Forest Service, CalFIRE, NDF and others, including ongoing maintenance and expansion of network. The position requires effective interaction/coordination with all NSL staff responsible for management of regional communications systems, software development, systems maintenance and other monitoring and research activities. The Seismic and Fire Camera Monitoring Project Manager will interact with the public, emergency managers and the media, as necessary, to establish an effective regional earthquake early warning program.
