The Joel A. Katz Law Library is seeking candidates for its Associate Director position. Under the broad supervision of the Associate Dean for Library & Technology Services, the Associate Director oversees much of the daily operation of the Law Library. This is a full-time Law Library Faculty, tenure-track position with administrative, supervisory and teaching responsibilities.

About the Law Library
The University of Tennessee College of Law's Joel A. Katz Law Library has a 500,000+ volume-equivalent collection and is staffed by eight full-time tenured or tenure-track law library faculty, and thirteen full-time library and information technology staff. Housed in an attractive, comfortable, state-of-the-art facility, the Law Library primarily serves approximately 375 law students, and 30 law faculty, although the library also support practicing attorneys, university students, faculty, and the general public.

Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership to the Head of Public Services and the Head of Technical Services in the Law Library's day to day operations, including services, collections, and access to information for students, faculty, and citizens of Tennessee.
  • Assist the Associate Dean for Library & Technology Services with personnel, budget, and administrative activities as assigned.
  • Plan and teach legal research, including the first year legal research course, advanced legal research course, or other research-related course.
  • Engage in supporting an active law faculty with scholarly legal information needs, as required.
  • Assist the Associate Dean in mentoring Law Library Faculty and Staff, and provide additional leadership for scholarship and librarian engagement with the College of Law and law or library-related professional organizations.
  • Contribute to the advancement of Law or Law Library practice through scholarship and professional activities at local, regional, and national levels.


The Associate Director is a member of the Law Library faculty. As a collaborative group, this team shares governance of the Law Library with the Associate Dean for Library & Technology Services and assists with the development and implementation of library strategies, policies, and procedures for delivering services, providing legal information resources, and maintaining a welcoming environment in support of the mission and goals of the library and the College.

Required Qualifications
  • Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school, and Master's degree in Information or Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution;
  • Librarian experience in a law school library in a university setting with significant, demonstrated experience supervising law school librarians;
  • Librarian experience supporting law faculty actively engaged in scholarly research;
  • Excellent administrative abilities including aptitude for and interest in planning, conducting projects, and working in a collaborative environment;
  • Demonstrated exceptional written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and success in writing and publishing;
  • Demonstrated successful experience teaching;
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills;
  • A strong work ethic.


Preferred Qualifications
  • An understanding of trends in legal research methodologies and legal information management;
  • An ability to adapt to evolving work environments.


Compensation: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, including a comprehensive benefits package.
