Part-Time Visiting Lecturer of Music as Conductor of the Claremont Concert Orchestra
Fall Semester 2024


Scripps College, a women's liberal arts college with a strong interdisciplinary tradition, and the Joint Music Program of Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges, invite applications for the position of Part-Time Visiting Lecturer of Music as Conductor of the Claremont Concert Orchestra in Fall 2024. Teaching and performance experience required. Doctorate preferred. ABD or master's degree with significant teaching/performing experience considered.

Responsibilities will include preparing the orchestra and conducting two concert programs. The ensemble regularly rehearses Monday and Wednesday evenings. The first program will be performed on October 19-20. The second program will be performed on December 7-8. The chosen candidate will select the concert repertoire in consultation with the current music director based on the ensemble's structural needs. In addition, the visiting conductor will work with the program coordinator to run other aspects related to the orchestra's functioning, including the creation of concert programs and publicity materials, the organization of sectionals, and the hiring of supplemental musicians.

The Claremont Concert Orchestra is an auditioned ensemble integrated by music and non-music majors from Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges. Applicants should submit a letter of application, c.v., two letters of recommendation, and links to recent conducting videos containing 15-20 minutes of material demonstrating the candidate's rehearsal/performance skills. The majority of the footage should have the conductor facing the camera. In addition, applicants should submit a sample program containing approximately 60 minutes of music conceived for a liberal arts college orchestra (instrumentation should be no larger than 2 2 2 2 – 4 2 3 1 – 2 perc. – Strings).

The salary for this position will range from $8,100 to $9,000 and will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
