Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream - Human Immunology and/or Microbiology

The Human Biology Program (within the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time continuing teaching stream position in Human Immunology and/or Microbiology. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024.

Applicants must have a PhD in a Life Sciences discipline that includes demonstrated excellence in human immunology or microbiology by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. A demonstrated record of excellence in Life Science teaching within human immunology or microbiology, particularly in multi-disciplinary fields related to human health and disease is also required (e.g., cancer immunology, pathobiology, human microbiome, chronic disease, or applications of microbiology aimed at improving human health). Interdisciplinary expertise in human biology is an asset. We require candidates whose PhD research in the Life Sciences involved significant laboratory research within the fields of bacteriology, virology, or mycology as a key component of their work. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing strengths in Human Biology .

Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree granting program at the undergraduate program level in Life Sciences subjects related to Human Biology, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must have experience teaching undergraduate cell and molecular biology, immunology, or microbiology laboratory courses; and have experience collaborating on quantitative research in human health & disease. Candidates also must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices, experience or interest in the enhancement of undergraduate experiential learning, and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. Experience working with, teaching, or mentoring diverse groups or diverse students is preferred.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical practices can be demonstrated through: teaching accomplishments; awards and accolades; presentations at significant conferences; the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi, course materials, and teaching evaluations; as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.
