Job Description Summary
The Letterpress Studio Assistant reports to the Director of Common Press, the letterpress and book arts studio at the University of Pennsylvania.
The Letterpress Studio Assistant will support studio management and the activities of this busy cross-disciplinary campus resource focused on letterpress printing, typesetting, and book arts, working an average of 15 - 20 hours per week during the semesters (about 46 weeks of the year).

Job Description

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Studio maintenance and organization, including supporting development of studio protocols.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean shop environment and a respectful, collaborative community atmosphere.
  • Assisting students, student workers, and others in type setting, printing, and project planning.
  • Supporting the Director in carrying out Press programming, which includes workshops in letterpress and book making, print production, visiting artist projects, and curricular support.
  • Supervising student workers in print projects and program facilitation during evening and weekend hours.
  • Archiving and documenting the activities of the Press, including organizing prints and taking photos during events.
  • Schedule will include evening and weekend hours on an ongoing basis. The Letterpress Studio Assistant will have access to Common Press facilities for independent work outside of work hours. This position is on site only.


Qualifications:
  • Solid skills and experience in letterpress printing, including setting movable type and experience with Vandercook cylinder presses.
  • Strong organizational skills and communications skills are paramount.
  • Patience and attention to detail are necessary.
  • An ability to communicate technical information to others and enforce studio protocols in a friendly manner.
  • Desired additional skills include experience with risograph printing, digital design, Adobe Creative Suite, and facility with maker space technologies such as CNC router and laser cutter. Marketing and communications skills are also a plus.


This is a 1-year temporary position.
