UMD Biology Term Faculty

The UMD Biology Department is the largest academic program in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth, with over 750 undergraduate students, 50 active graduate students, and 18 full-time faculty members. For prospective undergraduates we offer B.S. degrees in Biology and Cell & Molecular Biology and a B.A. degree in Biology. We also serve students seeking the B.A.S. in Life Science Teaching, for perspective graduate students, the Integrated Biosciences graduate program offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Biology faculty are actively involved in research supported by over $7 million in external grants. This allows us to offer all qualified undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in faculty research.

The Biology Department seeks a full-time, term faculty member for the 2022-2023 academic year to teach a molecular biology lab course in the fall (BIOL 5323 Molecular Biology Lab) and developmental biology in the spring (BIOL 4361 Developmental Biology, lecture + lab) plus two sections of an upper-division seminar course per semester (BIOL 3897 Communication in Biology). Additionally, the faculty member will hold office hours, attend weekly Departmental and occasional College meetings, and participate in student advising.

Required Qualifications:

Master's Degree in the Biological Sciences or related field such as Botany, Zoology, Genetics, or any other sub-discipline of the biological sciences from a regionally accredited institution.
Communication skills (oral and written) at university faculty level.
One year of relevant teaching experience at the university level; may include graduate TA experience.
Must have demonstrated ability to teach/interact effectively with a diverse group of students including those students who traditionally have been underrepresented in the Biological Sciences or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

Terminal degree in the Biological Sciences or related field such as Botany, Zoology, Genetics, or any other sub-discipline of the biological sciences from a regionally accredited institution.
One year of university or college level teaching experience as lead instructor.
