Job Description Summary
This is a full time research engineer position in the McKay Orthopaedic Research Laboratory of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. The research focus of the group is on stem cell mechanobiology and tissue engineering. Duties: The candidate will carry out independent experiments relating to the design and fabrication of anatomic tissue-engineered implants for the repair and replacement of osteochondral tissues. These experiments will include production of biomaterials, production of engineered constructs, mechanical testing of constructs, histological analysis of constructs, and biochemical and molecular analysis of constructs, as well as planning and implementing surgical implantation of constructs in a large animal model and assessment thereof. The research Spec C will also work independently in the design and development of mechanical testing and motion tracking devices. This includes designing using CAD/drafting software, and manufacturing by machining (Lathe, Milling Machine, Drill Press, CNC Mill, Laser Cutter, and other Advanced Manufacturing Devices) and 3D printing. The candidate will develop and program software for robotic motion control actuation and measurement and mechanical data analysis utilizing advanced programming in Arduino, Labview, Matlab, C, and Python. The candidate will also perform advanced 3D modeling and design and produce mechanical devices in machine ships located at McKay and across campus. The candidate will provide technical guidance and assistance to post-docs, graduate students, and research staff within the group in the design and development of mechanical testing devices and analysis software. Other duties will include management of laboratory resources, oversight of the laboratory chemical inventory and safety plan, maintenance of laboratory equipment (including computers), laboratory stock solutions, ordering supplies for the group, monitoring expenses, keeping an organized notebook, and training new staff in relevant procedures. The candidate will also take a leadership role in study planning, surgeries, and analysis of large animal experiments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The minimum of a Bachelor's Degree with 3-5 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Master's Degree and 3-5 years' experience MS in Engineering (Mechanical or Biomedical) is preferred. The candidate must be self-motivated, reliable, responsible, and comfortable with mechanical design and development, and the use of advanced manufacturing tools. The candidate must have excellent skills and experience with CAD design and drafting, 3D printing, machining (Lathe, Milling Machine, Drill Press, CNC Mill, Laser Cutter, and other Advanced Manufacturing Devices) and candidate must have experience in electrical engineering, circuit design and construction, robotic motion control actuation and measurement, and microcontrollers. Extensive experience in biomedical research is required. The candidate must also have experience working directly with large animals in a research setting and must be well versed in laboratory animal husbandry, aseptic surgical technique, and large animal anatomy. Good organization, communication, and writing skills are required. Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint is required and some familiarity with computer networking and troubleshooting is a plus. Position is contingent upon funding.
