Located on the beautiful and vibrant campus of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Vet's Ryan Veterinary Hospital in Philadelphia provides care for dogs, cats, and other domestic/companion animals, handling more than 30,000 patient visits a year, some 9,000 of which are emergency cases. Ryan Hospital is a Level One Trauma Facility certified by Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECSS).

Job Description

As a valued member of Penn Vet's Ryan Hospital, you will work in a supportive environment where you will have professional growth opportunities. If you are a skilled Veterinary Nurse who is passionate about caring for animals, interested in further developing your skills and working with an elite team of clinicians then Penn Vet is the place for you.

We are seeking a Veterinary Head Nurse to supervise the ICU nursing staff. This nurse will manage a growing staff of credentialed veterinary technicians and VTS specialists.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Co-manage rotating CVT's with the wards nursing supervisor.

  • Active, on the floor, supervisor with % of time off floor for administrative duties.

  • Schedule may be varied, depending on the needs of the service.

  • Provide vision and leadership for the service.

  • Recruit competent staff to meet operational needs of the hospital.

  • Properly orient staff to their roles, accountabilities and performance measures.

  • Promote positive employee relations and team work.

  • Develop a talent management plan for current and future staff.

  • Promote career development of your staff.

  • Clearly define work expectations.

  • Address performance issues immediately and directly, as well as conduct annual performance appraisals.

  • Collaborate with other supervisors, clinicians and administration to improve patient care and customer service.

  • Collaborate with the ICU clinicians to create policies and procedures relating to the operation of ICU.

  • Ensure coverage for 24/7 operation, including sharing on call responsibilities with the staff and assistant supervisor.

  • Charge capture

  • Payroll submission

    Qualifications

  • Must possess advanced knowledge of Critical Care Nursing with a minimum of 5 years of experience in critical care.

  • Previous management experience preferred.

  • Must be a CVT. Those with VTS certification or progress towards certification will be given highest consideration.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities.
