We are looking for a full time research engineer, under the direction of Dr. L. Scott Levin and Dr. Foteini Moukioti, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. We are looking for a full time research engineer, under the direction of Dr. L. Scott Levin and Dr. Foteini Moukioti, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. The research focus is on the development and evaluation of a novel device for ex vivo limb preservation system.

Dr. L. Scott Levin and colleagues are developing a perfusion system to preserve limbs temporarily outside the body (or "ex vivo") in order to salvage limbs that would otherwise be amputated and discarded, thereby enabling the limb to be replanted, transplanted or reconstructed using vascularized tissue. Amputations lead to significant morbidity, rehabilitation, and lifestyle modification for the individual, impacting quality of life. Instead, if clinicians can preserve limb viability and function ex vivo, clinicians can replant the limb at a later time, at hospitals with the appropriate resources and expertise to perform surgery. In addition to expanding the capabilities of trauma care, such a system would also increase recipient access to donor tissues for vascularized composite allotransplantation. The team is currently evaluating the biological and technical performance of their novel ex vivo perfusion system, with the ultimate goal of bringing this to clinical use.

The research engineer will work closely with clinicians and scientists, as well as occasionally with collaborators, as part of an interdisciplinary team. The research engineer will independently execute experiments under the supervision of the PI and other senior staff. The research engineer will operate medical devices and equipment, and characterize the physiological, morphological, and functional properties of large animal and human limbs and skeletal tissues, using histological, mechanical and molecular analysis techniques. In addition, the research engineer will be responsible for assisting with and/or independently planning experiments, interpreting and summarizing results in written reports and meetings, and coordinating and managing project timelines and deliverables.
