The Office of Career Strategy is dedicated to helping students understand their professional goals and interests, learn about the exciting world of possibilities, chart their career paths and achieve their goals - during law school and throughout their professional lifetime.

Reporting to the Director for Private Sector Recruiting, the Career Counselor provides career support to all students, with a specialization on private sector employment. This role also supports the development and delivery of private sector programs and assists in the tracking, measurement and reporting of employment outcomes.

This is a term position, up to 3 years, with the option of part-time.

Responsibilities include:

Support the development and delivery of career education programs

Working in collaboration with counseling team, support the development and delivery programming to orient 1Ls to foundational career development skills, the specific timelines relating to job searches, and the programs, services, and resources of our office.

Support the development and delivery of all private sector programs, including those relating to understanding practice areas, law firm programming, and on-campus interviewing and other recruiting programs.

Provide career counseling to students

Provide highly individualized counseling and associated job search support to all students on an as-needed basis, including reviewing resumes and cover letters, coaching students on job search strategies, conducting mock interviews, and OCI bid list review.

Support relationship building and expertise in private sector practices and employers

Assist in developing and maintaining resources and information about private sector legal employers for the purposes of building relationships to facilitate student employment with employers who currently recruit and hire our students, as well as those with less visibility to our students due to, e.g. geography, practice, size and compensation.

Manage student and graduate employment tracking

Manage the monitoring of employment outcomes for all JD students (public and private sectors). Manage employment tracking databases, oversee information collection of data entry by administrative coordinator and/or student interns. In communication with the Associate Dean for Career Strategy, ensure compliance with all reporting requirements (AALS, ABA, etc.). Develop reporting metrics, and provide updates OCS stakeholders based on their needs.

Other duties as assigned

Candidate Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S. required; J.D. strongly preferred.
  • At least five years of increasing responsibility in academic administration, law firm and/or business environment.
  • Experience with JD career counseling, including for private sector job search/strategy, and formal recruiting programs preferred.
  • Strong organization skills, attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft office suite and survey tools preferred
  • A history of working successfully with diverse constituencies, including employers, faculty, alumni, current students, prospective students, and colleagues.
  • Commitment to innovation, fostering a kind and supportive work environment, and an established track records as collaborators in the workplace. Commitment to the Penn Law ideal of collaboration is required.
